Griffonia simplicifolia is a woody climbing shrub native to West Africa and Central Africa. It grows to about 3 m, and bears greenish flowers followed by black pods. The Griffonia seed contain hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), which is a hormone produced by the brain that affects our mood, sleep and appetite, causing an imbalance in serotonin in the brain that requires 5-HTP to keep the body in its proper state. It has a calming effect as an important chemical for the brain to control mood, behavior, appetite, sleep and impulsivity. It can also treat insomnia, headache, depression and obesity.
